TV's Flash by hoganvibe
TV's Flash
I have become a fan of the new CW show "The Flash" and decided to pay tribute to it in an exercise. I recently discovered that I tore ligaments in my drawing wrist and have not been able to work in some time. This is the first piece that I have completed in nearly three weeks and what would have normally taken an hour to do took me a better part of two days. It's frustrating, but it is progress.

The Star Spangled Gal by hoganvibe
The Star Spangled Gal
I'll admit that this watercolor came out a little more Zooey Deschanel than I had planned... but I'll run with it. Based on the USO chorus girls from "Captain America: The First Avenger"

I have no art secrets.

There are no tricks that I can show you that will make you a better artist.

I draw the way I do because when I was young, my dad taught me the fundamentals of art. As I grew older, he showed me that there are more and more things to learn... but always there's the fundamentals. I went to college and they crammed my head full of theories. When I tried to get a job at Marvel, they informed me that I forgot my fundamentals. So I went to a wonderful place called the Kubert School... where they made sure I wouldn't forget my fundamentals.

You don't need to go to the Kubert School (although I recommend you do). Constantly practice your fundamentals. Construct object from shapes. Study anatomy. Understand perspective. Don't ignore reference. Don't be a slave to reference.

Most important: Draw every day. Draw the boring things. Rocks. Lamp posts. Sidewalks. Everything.

Out of curiousity, do you do any superhero role-plays at all?

No problem! I saw you at Planet Comicon but had to get back to my table so I didn't get the chance to complement you in person.

Wish I would have saw you at Planet Comicon. I'm an administrator for the Iowa Cosplay group on Facebook. I'm sure your costume would have inspired some of our members. Maybe next year!

Although I've seen some of your art in the past, this was the first time I bothered to explore your gallery. It was such a treat! You earned a Watch from me.
