Alan Rickman as Doctor Lazarus by hoganvibe
Alan Rickman as Doctor Lazarus
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Alan Rickman changed my life. Well, maybe he didn't directly, but the roles he played have been extremely influential on my career and the movies that I watch. I would probably have to do a lifetime of work in tribute to him to fully express his influence.

The Goblin King... or the Battle of the Bulge
I was pretty shocked when the news came through on Monday about David Bowie's passing. I'll admit it... I don't listen to a lot of music. BUT I am all about the Muppets and one of the major reasons why is because of the Labyrinth.

I did this late on Monday night. I wasn't going to do any tribute work. But I was honestly moved by everyone who posted what this man meant to them. Then I started to think about what he meant to me. It didn't take too long for me to realize that this was a piece that I had to do .

Acrylic paint and Prismacolor on chip board.

Rey by hoganvibe
Rey
I actually painted this about a month before I posted this. It's Rey from Star Wars and it was a practice piece to work on skin tone techniques.

I have no art secrets.

There are no tricks that I can show you that will make you a better artist.

I draw the way I do because when I was young, my dad taught me the fundamentals of art. As I grew older, he showed me that there are more and more things to learn... but always there's the fundamentals. I went to college and they crammed my head full of theories. When I tried to get a job at Marvel, they informed me that I forgot my fundamentals. So I went to a wonderful place called the Kubert School... where they made sure I wouldn't forget my fundamentals.

You don't need to go to the Kubert School (although I recommend you do). Constantly practice your fundamentals. Construct object from shapes. Study anatomy. Understand perspective. Don't ignore reference. Don't be a slave to reference.

Most important: Draw every day. Draw the boring things. Rocks. Lamp posts. Sidewalks. Everything.

Out of curiousity, do you do any superhero role-plays at all?

No problem! I saw you at Planet Comicon but had to get back to my table so I didn't get the chance to complement you in person.

Wish I would have saw you at Planet Comicon. I'm an administrator for the Iowa Cosplay group on Facebook. I'm sure your costume would have inspired some of our members. Maybe next year!

Although I've seen some of your art in the past, this was the first time I bothered to explore your gallery. It was such a treat! You earned a Watch from me.
